Posted in: A-List Advice, Blog, Details, Expertise ♦ Friday, April 27th, 2012, 5:00 pm ♦ 2 Comments

Shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses has never been so fun. With so many new styles, bold colors and alluring embellishments to choose from, this season’s bridal line-up is sure to make a statement.

Check out our top 5 favorite trends that are sure to take the cake this wedding season:

1. Color-Me-Pretty: Don’t be afraid to explore your colorful side. Tangerine may be the color of the year, but sunshine yellow, hot pink and electric blue follow closely behind. With so many beautiful bright colors to choose from, your wedding is bound to make a bold statement.

2. Style Throwback: While the calendar may say 2012, the runway screams 1950. From sea-foam green and pillbox hats to lace detailing and swing-style dresses, classic trends have resurfaced and are making their way into your bridal lineup.

3. Trendy InterMix: Why choose one bridesmaids’ dress style when mixing it up is way more fun. Play around with different hemlines, fabrics, colors, and even shoes. This intermix of style options creates a distinctive yet cohesive looks. Our trendsetting tip? Try a canary yellow dress with a beautiful teal shoe.

4. Adore Your Adornments: Sashes, broaches and embellished belts are all the rage, and brides will have it easy this season as the details are already in the design. When looking for the perfect bridesmaids’ dress, don’t just think about the color; think about the detailing that will make your girls shine.

5. Individual Glam: Every girl has a different style and body type – why not let their dresses reflect their personality? Try giving your bridesmaids an option within three styles, such as off the shoulder, strapless and v-neck; your bridesmaids will thank you knowing that they will be comfortable and confident in the dress that best suits their figure.

However you choose to mix-and-match, bridesmaids are sure to stand out at any “I Do” celebration.

Fashion Forward Friday: Picnic Love

Posted in: Blog, Details, Fashion Forward ♦ Friday, April 20th, 2012, 9:00 am ♦ 4 Comments

Who doesn’t love a fabulous picnic? We’ve put together a couple of our favorite summer picnic must-haves to give you everything you need for this fun afternoon outing:

1. Picnic basket: Check out outdoor posh for all your picnic and outdoor gear. With pages to choose from, this basket was our favorite. The classic blue gingham is the perfect picnic pattern.

2. Picnic blanket: We are loving Calypso‘s pink pom-pom throw. This flirty throw won’t only look great on the grass, but on your couch as well. Who doesn’t love a dual-purpose purchase?

3. Picnic outfit: J Crew knows how to do it right. Shirt dresses are all the rage – the panama hat and cherry-red striped flats create the perfect outfit for the perfect picnic.

4. Wine: What’s a picnic without a great bottle of wine? One of our top red wine picks is The Scribbler. This Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz wine comes from Australia’s most celebrated wine region, the Barossa. Picnic friendly feature – This bottle has a screw top so there’s no need to worry about packing a cork-screw.  Pick up this tasty bottle at your local Whole Foods.

5. Sunglasses: For a sunny day at the park, everyone needs a great pair of sunglasses! We love these aviator Ray-Bans, they are the perfect compliment to the shirt dress.

An Earth Day Love Story

Posted in: Blog, Details, Love Stories ♦ Monday, April 16th, 2012, 5:29 pm ♦ 1 Comment

With Earth Day coming up on April 22, what better time to reflect on our planet and how we can contribute to making a difference. We thought we’d share a couple of our loves for this wedding season that also happen to be Earth friendly.

Here comes the bride… aaand there goes her dress. British researchers have developed a wedding gown that can be dissolved in water to transform it into five new wearable pieces. The trick: Polyvinyl alcohol, an odorless nontoxic polymer that breaks down in water without harming the environment.

These flats are handmade from cotton fabrics and hemp with 0% chemical adhesives used. Flexible soles are durably formed from more than 25 layers of sustainable fabrics and hemp thread. These flats are so romantic and dreamy, not to mention vegan and really comfy.

We are in love with Bario-Neal, a small studio out of Philladelphia that specializes in re-claimed metals, ethically sourced stones and fluid designs that incorporate the best of contemporary and vintage style.

Who says eco-friendly can’t be fahsion-forward?

Fashion Forward Friday: Fashions for Freedom

We believe that supporting charitable organizations is always on-trend! Amani ya Juu, meaning “higher peace” in Swahili, is a project for marginalized women of Africa. The women learn practical skills (from sewing to marketing, purchasing, bookkeeping and more) as a way to improve their quality of life. Sara, one of our Fabulette’s, had the pleasure of attending this fabulous event last weekend, which combined a fashion runway show with music, dance and narrative to tell the powerful story of refugee women’s lives being transformed through the ministry of Amani. The 27-garment collection that was featured was created expressly for Amani Liberia by international designer and Bravo TV’s Project Runway Star, Korto Momolu.

If you would like to learn more and support the work of Amani, please visit www.amaniafrica.org. You can make a donation or purchase from their online boutique, where proceeds go directly back to the women of Amani, affording them a dignified, self-sustaining lifestyle. Go shopping for a good cause!

For all you gals looking to combine trends, why not incorporate floral with country-chic. Lane Boots made this possible with their new Allie Boots, creating the perfect Springtime shoe. Wear it with short shorts, fun skirts or maxi dresses. One word: giddy-up!

Fashion Forward Friday: Make It Personal

Posted in: Blog, Details, Fashion Forward ♦ Friday, March 23rd, 2012, 9:00 am ♦ 2 Comments

When choosing your wedding details, remember it’s not the amount of money you spend but the personal touches that wow your guests. One great way to make it personal is to incorporate your favorite quote into your details. Think invitations, napkins, even your cake…

D.I.Y. Easter Basket

Posted in: Blog, Details ♦ Wednesday, March 21st, 2012, 3:00 pm ♦ 5 Comments

We love DIYs, especially when they incorporate some of our favorite things: upcycling, gorgeous embellishments and chocolate. Instead of buying a plain basket this Easter try creating your own stylized one that can last from year to year.

Style-Your-Basket Steps:

1)   Find your basket: There are many great options at Michael’s, JoAnn’s, Target or your favorite vintage store. Find the perfect cloth or wicker basket that you can embellish.

2)   Shop for your details: find ribbons, vintage trimmings, silk flowers, butterflies, custom brads and any other details that you love. If you have saved ribbons from gifts or have a favorite ribbon trim from your wedding dress this is the perfect place to incorporate these details.

3)   Prepare your tools: For those of you who do not have the time to sew on the embellishments, the hot glue gun will be your best friend, plus it works beautifully.

4)   Attach your details: Play with your details to find the perfect spot on your basket. Remember there’s no right way to embellish your basket – don’t be afraid to unleash your inner creative diva.

5)   Fill your basket: Here’s the fun part! Find some Easter grass, stuffed bunnies, your favorite childhood treats and any other goodies that make you smile. Our basket is sure to be filled with chocolate eggs, marshmallow peeps and candy buttons.

*Embellishment Tip – Create your own gorgeous layered flower with a custom center brad:

1)   Purchase your favorite brads and artificial flowers. You will want all different petal sizes and colors.

2)   Pop the flower off and remove the plastic center (this leaves you with just the petals and a hole in the middle).

3)   Layer petals from small to large. Remember to pick color combinations that you love.

4)   Feed your embellished brad through your layered petals and secure at the base. Feel free to add some glitter or crystal embellishments to give it an extra wow factor.

5)   Voila! You have a custom, layered flower.

D.I.Y. Vintage Chalkboard Decor

Posted in: Blog, Details ♦ Wednesday, March 7th, 2012, 2:50 pm ♦ 2 Comments

Add some personality to your next event! We know you’ve seen chalkboards used as signage for menus, directions and seating, now it’s time to try adding your own design to this fun detail piece in five easy steps:

Step 1: Finding cool vintage frames. They come in all different shapes and sizes as well as ornamentation. Try scoping out Craig’s List, nearby garage sales, vintage stores or your grandmother’s attic.

Step 2: Once you’ve found some frames you love, remove the centerpieces and measure the inside of the frame for the board insert that you will be adding.

Step 3: Go to Home Depot or any hardware store and buy particle board (they will custom cut any sizes you need). Make sure the thickness is ¾ inches in diameter.

Step 4: Paint the smooth side of the particle board with chalkboard paint (this can also be purchased from Home Depot).

Step 5: Adhere the dried chalkboard into your frame.

Voila! You have created a customized and unique detail for your event.

Check us out every Wednesday for more DIY ideas. If you’d like to share some of your own clever DIYs we’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line at ideas@somethingfab.com
